Project Overview

SuperStar Positive Pathways was a student-designed AI-supported website created to address a challenge affecting both students and teachers: inconsistent behavior expectations and the resulting loss of instructional time.

As part of the Presidential AI Challenge, four fifth-grade students worked together to investigate a real problem within their school environment and design a technology-based solution. Rather than focusing on punishment or discipline, students chose to create a supportive tool that would help teachers reflect on classroom behavior patterns, identify positive strategies, and strengthen learning environments.

The project challenged students to move beyond being consumers of technology and become designers of AI-supported solutions that serve people and communities.

The Problem

Students recognized that classroom disruptions and inconsistent expectations often create barriers to learning. Teachers frequently manage behavior while simultaneously trying to provide instruction, support students, and maintain a positive classroom culture.

The team asked:

How can AI help teachers create more positive learning environments without replacing teacher judgment or compromising student privacy?

The Solution

Students designed and built an AI-supported website called SuperStar Positive Pathways using Playlab.ai.

The website was designed to function as a reflective support tool for teachers. Rather than collecting student data or making disciplinary decisions, the platform encourages teachers to examine patterns, identify successful strategies, and consider positive approaches to classroom management.

The website was intentionally designed around the belief that technology should support human decision-making rather than replace it.

AI Tools and Development Process

Students used:

  • Playlab.ai to design and develop the website

  • ChatGPT to support brainstorming, drafting, organization, and revision

  • Presentation and video tools to communicate their solution

Throughout the process, students learned that AI is most effective when guided by clear human purpose and thoughtful design.

Students were responsible for:

  • Identifying the problem

  • Defining the audience

  • Designing the solution

  • Reviewing AI-generated content

  • Revising language and recommendations

  • Explaining ethical considerations

  • Presenting the final product

Ethical AI Design

A major focus of the project was responsible AI use.

Students intentionally designed the platform to:

  • Protect student privacy

  • Avoid collecting identifying student information

  • Support positive behavior rather than punishment

  • Preserve teacher autonomy

  • Maintain human oversight of AI-generated suggestions

Through research and discussion, students learned that AI should function as a tool for reflection and support rather than an authority figure or decision-maker.

This understanding shaped every aspect of the project.

Student Learning Outcomes

Through the development of SuperStar Positive Pathways, students demonstrated:

AI Literacy

  • Understanding how AI tools can support problem-solving

  • Evaluating AI-generated outputs

  • Revising and improving AI-supported content

  • Understanding the strengths and limitations of AI systems

Design Thinking

  • Identifying authentic community problems

  • Generating solutions

  • Testing ideas

  • Refining products based on purpose and audience

Civic Problem-Solving

  • Considering the needs of teachers and students

  • Designing solutions for the common good

  • Exploring how technology can improve communities

Ethical Reasoning

  • Examining privacy concerns

  • Considering the impact of AI systems

  • Understanding responsible technology use

  • Recognizing the importance of human judgment

Educator Reflection

This project demonstrated the power of giving students authentic opportunities to solve real-world problems with emerging technologies.

The most significant learning did not come from building a website. It came from students recognizing that AI should be designed with people in mind.

Students learned that effective technology solutions require empathy, responsibility, and critical thinking. They explored how AI can support educators while respecting privacy, maintaining fairness, and preserving human decision-making.

As an educator, I observed students moving beyond curiosity about AI and into meaningful conversations about ethics, responsibility, leadership, and community improvement.

The project reinforced my belief that AI literacy should not focus solely on learning how to use tools. Students must also learn how to evaluate technology, question its impact, and design solutions that serve people and communities.

Impact

SuperStar Positive Pathways earned recognition as a Tennessee State Champion in the Presidential AI Challenge.

More importantly, the project demonstrated that elementary students are capable of engaging in sophisticated conversations about artificial intelligence, ethics, human-centered design, and community problem-solving when given meaningful opportunities to lead.

This project serves as an example of how AI education can empower students to become creators, innovators, and responsible digital citizens rather than passive users of technology.

Questions, Feedback, Collaboration, and Support

SuperStar Positive Pathways represents one example of what is possible when students are given opportunities to explore artificial intelligence as creators, problem-solvers, and community contributors. While this project began as a Presidential AI Challenge submission, the ideas behind it continue to evolve.

I welcome questions, feedback, and opportunities to learn from others who are exploring responsible AI use in education. I am particularly interested in conversations related to AI literacy, student innovation, civic problem-solving, ethical AI implementation, computer science education, and the development of student-centered learning experiences.

If you are an educator, school leader, researcher, nonprofit organization, community partner, or industry professional interested in discussing this project, sharing ideas, providing feedback, or exploring collaboration opportunities, I would love to connect.

I also welcome opportunities to support schools, educators, and students through presentations, workshops, curriculum development, project-based learning experiences, AI literacy initiatives, and community-centered innovation projects.

Together, we can help ensure that students are not only prepared to use AI, but are empowered to shape how it is used to improve their schools, communities, and future opportunities.
